╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Each program has been rated with 1 to 5 stars (*'s),
with 1 being poor, 5 being fantastic!
The * rating system is based on 6 questions we ask of every program.
1. Is program full featured and performs as expected?
2. Is program well documented or has online help?
3. Is program easy to use and learn?
4. Does program have a modern intuitive interface?
5. What is quality of program compared to like programs?
6. Is program crippled or annoying? 1=yes 2=some 3=no
Each question can be answered with a value of 1 to 3. (1=Poor,
2=OK, 3=Excellent) A computer program generates the * rating based
on the reviewer's answers.
If all six questions are answered with 3's the program will
generate a *****! rating. This indicates a superior program and
makes for excellent search criteria. If all six are answered with
1's a 1 * rating will be generated. The reason a 1 * program will
exist in our catalog will be because it is unique enough !
Throughout the catalog files occupying less than 120k of disk
space have been tagged with the Bonus! message. Because of their
small size we allow you to choose any three of these programs to be
copied onto a single 360k disk! This gives you more programs for
your money without having to buy nearly empty disks containing only
one small program or a full disk with a bunch of programs you don't
want or need. So take advantage of the Bonus! programs, many of them
are among the best in the catalog!
WHAT IT IS...
The catalog on a disk is a program for viewing descriptions of
the Shareware and Public Domain software in our library. It will
allow you to tag interesting files then write their names and numbers
to disk. After writing your choices to disk you can print out a list
of tagged files or take the disk to jigsaw software's booth/store so
the file numbers can be "read in" and the programs you want can be
copied.
REQUIREMENTS
The Catalog on a Disk program will run on any PC compatible
computer with 256k or more RAM and DOS 3.0 or better. It looks best
on a color monitor, yet will run on any kind. If you are using
monochrome start the catalog with the /m parameter. It will support
a microsoft compatible mouse. It can be used with any configuration
of drives. Hard disks, single floppies and dual floppies can all be
used to their best advantage. It will also support a MicroSoft
compatible Mouse.
HOW TO SET IT UP...
Regardless of the type of disk media you've received this
catalog on it is easy to install.
To install it on a hard drive simply copy all of it's files into
a special subdirectory. A simple batch file has been provided that
will do this for you.
1. Insert disk #1 of the catalog disks into any floppy drive
that it will fit into.
2. Type INSTALL A: C:, then press ENTER. Substitute drive
letters of your choice. Ex: INSTALL A: D:(With A: being
the source and D: being the destination.)
3. Press any key to allow the install to proceed or if you're
not ready yet, press the CTRL-C keys at the same time to
cancel the install.
4. After the installation is complete you can type the word
CAT, then press ENTER to start the program.
If you're running the program from a TWO FLOPPY SYSTEM simply
insert both disks into the two drives, then change to the drive that
has disk #1 in it and type the word CAT, then press ENTER to start
the program. The program will tell you what to do about changing
drives.
If you're running the program from a SINGLE FLOPPY SYSTEM start
the program by inserting disk #1 into your floppy drive, then type
the word CAT and press ENTER. Then program will tell you when to
change disks.
USING THE CATALOG PROGRAM...
When the program first comes up it has three menu choices.
They are:
1. Select Program Categories
2. Review tagged files
3. Write tagged files to disk
H. Displays a HELP screen
Select Program Categories
The first thing to do is choice #1, Select Program Categories.
After pressing 1 the program will display a list of file choices and
more than 80 different categories of shareware and public domain
programs.
The choices above the categories are either text files that can
be viewed or batch files that will perform various functions. (Such
as printing the catalog, order forms, etc.) The rest are program
categories that our files have been divided into.
Hi-light a program category then press ENTER. A list of all the
files in that category will be displayed. You can now use the
PGUP/PGDN, HOME/END and ARROW keys to move about in the document.
When you find a program you like you can use the ARROW keys to
hi-light the file name then press the INSERT or + key to tag it.
Pressing the DELETE or - key will un-tag it. After you've tagged all
the files you want in this category press the ENTER key to save the
tagged files and return to the main menu.
Review Tagged Files
From the main menu you can now select another category to view
or review the names of the files you have already tagged. (2. Review
Tagged Files) When reviewing files that have been tagged you can
delete them by pressing the DEL key.
Write Tagged Files to Disk
After tagging all the files you like you can write them to a
file on disk that can be "read in" by JIGSAW at our booth/store.The
program will also write a text file called TAGGED.LST. This file
contains the names and numbers of each file you tagged. You can
print this to have a hard copy of your tagged files.
Search Displayed File
At any time while viewing a file you can press the ENTER key to
display a help menu. (YOU MUST PRESS THE ENTER KEY TO SAVE TAGGED
FILES!) From this menu you can perform a NON-CASE SENSITIVE search
of the file you are currently viewing. This means the program will
find occurrences of a string whether it is capitalized or not, or any
combination of capitalized or non-capitalized letters. This option
does not show up on the menu unless you use the arrow keys to scroll
down to it. Use the ENTER key to repeat the search or press ESC to
return to the main menu.
Retrieve Tagged Files From Disk
When this option is selected from the category menu the program
starts an internal procedure that retrieves the tagged file list from
a floppy disk. The actual name of the file it retrieves is TAGLIST.
This will allow you to tag files, save them to disk, then return to
reviewing files later.
Print Full Description Catalog
A second internal menu option is the programs ability to print
the entire catalog or any individual categories. From the category
menu this option is called PRINT FULL DESCRIPTION CATALOG. Use the
ARROW keys to move through the categories and the +/- or INS or DEL
keys to tag the files you wish to print.
Display Hardware Information
This feature queries the catalog users computer system to
display a variety of system information. The information displayed
is useful in determining what types of software can be run on your
system. Pay special attention to DOS versions and video types.
Globally Search Entire Catalog
The global search allows you to tag any or all of the different
categories then enter a search string. The program will search each
tagged category until a match is found then display the description
file where the string was matched. This feature is much faster if
the CATALOG is run from a hard drive. You can still tag files and
later save them to disk.
